Toronto – 25 May, 2013

Well a great cruise has come to an end (sadly), we met many new friends and had a wonderful time over the 39 nights (one short of Noah). Disembarkation was speedy and we were off to the airport at Vancouver for our4.5 hour flight to Toronto arriving at around 7pm (due to time change).

On arriving we couldn’t have been happier to find the Novotel Toronto Centre has a street full of restaurants, cafes, pubs right at the front door. It was Saturday night and thought we would grab a bite to eat and have an early night after a long day. Wrong, we found some great bars with great food (chowder to die for) and a fantastic band that generated so much energy in the place we stayed until after 1am before heading back across the road to the motel.

We had heard mixed stories about Toronto with some saying there was nothing here and not worth coming too. Nothing could be further from the truth and just flying over the Great Lakes enroute here we could see rich farmlands, beautiful lakes and a thriving town. Ruth enjoyed the window seat in the plane and got some great aerial shots which I’m sure she’ll add to this post soon. It’s just so clean and nice here. On Sunday morning we got up and headed for the hop-on-hop-off bus to get our bearings. The city was crowded being a weekend so we opted to do the harbour cruise first as we have a 3 day bus pass so will do the bus component on week days.

The harbour was beautiful and very big with islands that have recreation facilities and are accessed by ferries. The harbour, being only 40 feet deep freezes over in winter and they use ice breakers to carve paths for the ferries. After a great time on the Harbour we relaxed at a harbourside bar for some beer, sangria and chicken wings (which are really popular here). The food is good but it is hard to find items on menu’s that have basic vegetables particularly greens.

I’m slowly managing to get the videos uploaded and added to the posts. I have almost completed the ones for the towns in Alaska and added them to the posts. Ruth still has plenty of photos to get uploaded also.

The Great Lakes are something else, aren’t they? I’d always imagined them as being, well, like Lake Macquarie…. Reality’s a little different.

Hi Stewart, yes the first lake (Michigan) we flew over was a grey colour. Lake Ontario was a brilliant blue. And yes, much larger than Lake Macquaire. I was amazed that the farms/paddock went right to the shoreline.
