Niagara Falls Day 1 Wednesday 29 May,2013

We arrived around 2pm and after settling in to our beautiful room on the 15th floor of the Marriott Fallsview and just being blown away by the room with it’s Jacuzzi, Electric Fireplace and outstanding view over both the horseshoe Canadian Falls and the American Falls it was time to go and look around. Our room package also included a 2 day pass on the WeGo Bus. This is a really great way to get around here. There are four lines and each line interlinks depending on where you want to go but the blue line does the main downtown and falls area, so we spent most our time on this route.

We did a loop on the Blue line first to get our bearings and as it was nearing Beer-O-Clock we hopped off at a stop called ‘Table Rock’. This is a restaurant and lookout directly on top of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. As luck had it the Royal Canadian Air Force Acrobatic Team called the ‘Snowbirds’ (similar to our Roulettes in Australia) were performing at 6pm over the Falls. We had secured a prime position (with beer, beverages and food available) to watch the show.

By the end of Day 1 we were convinced this was a suitable place to go on anyones ‘bucket list’… the falls are just mesmerizing and no matter how much you look at them you just never tire. It is so relaxing, even at night just having the window open a fraction to let the sound of the falls in quickly puts you to sleep. After the show and some time unwinding we jumped back on the bus to return to the Marriott for Dinner. Also part of our package was a $40 voucher for the restaurant and Ruth was craving for some green vegetables, which you don’t see much uf over here. Coleslaw and salads are as about as close as you come in most pub grub establishments.

The restaurant prices were expensive (in my view anyway). What you also seem to forget at first sight is that they never tell you the full amount with taxes added. They seem to have 2 taxes a NST and a TIFF. I have no idea what they are. So we decided on a simple steak and vegetables with gravy, a bottle of wine and a glass of merlot. The cheapest steak on the menu was the New York Strip. Ruth had an 8oz which was $30 and I had a 12oz which was $40. The bottle of wine was $39 and glass of merlot $10. Total $120 plus tax $36 equals $156. Thankfully the $40 voucher reduced this a little. So to get the ‘real price’ you have to persist in asking ‘and how much tax’ as it varies from item/service….. you often see a price like $42** displayed…. this means the item is $42 plus tax 1 plus tax 2.

We went up to our room to see the lights on the falls which came on at 9pm. Although we could see some colours on the falls from the lights they weren’t as spectacular as we had anticipated. We are looking forward to Friday night when the fireworks is on over the falls at 10pm.

Thanks Paul and Ruth. This is a big nostalgia kick for me. We visited the falls in 1991! It was still a bit low rent Gold Coasty in places but it looks like there’s been a bit of investment in the last twenty years.

Hi Stewart – and still growing. There are lots of hotels like the one we chose. We did lots of research and selected the best as per trip advisor and really worked with the hotel to get a high floor, as when you book online they only advertise up to floor 9. So Paul rang them from Australia months ago to get what we wanted. Only there once so I wanted to do it right. When we arrived they had a deal on so the room was actually cheaper than when we had booked and they took the price down – that’s good business!
