Yakutat Bay – Sunday – 19 May, 2013

After leaving the freezing conditions of Whittier yesterday the Diamond Princess sailed south to Yakutat Bay, Alaska. In 2011 when we attempted to come into the bay the fog was so bad the ship was unable to proceed into the full length of the bay so we missed seeing the notorious Hubbard Glacier which lies at the end of the bay. This Glacier is the only major glacier that continues to grow as all the other major Glaciers are receding.

Today, the weather looked really promising and our dreams of finally seeing this Glacier were realised. We couldn’t believe the sun would be so gracious to allow us to be in such a pristine setting of snow capped mountains, a glacier, and to be able to bask in it’s warmth. If you watch the video you will see exactly what we experienced. You know sometimes you just can’t put it into words. I can’t upload it here at present but when we get to Toronto Canada at the end of May 2013 I will update all the movies to the blog. Unfortunately, satellite internet aboard ships is only fast enough for text messages/emails but that is also great as we can keep in touch with loved ones.
